A software-based system necessitates that every computer under supervision has a network connection. If the computers are only governed locally, then a local area network (LAN) will suffice. For oversight from any machine connected to the internet, an internet connection is required.

If you're looking to get software and services for your computers, LogMeIn is a provider you should consider. They offer various levels of support, with the basic 'simple remote control' for free (LogMeInFree), and the more comprehensive 'full service' (LogMeInPro) with a fee of around $20 per PC per month. LogMeIn generally works well, however for the best performance make sure your computers are connected by broadband or high-speed LAN connection. To get started, simply choose the service that works for you, create an account, and download/install the software.

The alternative software-based option is an open source solution known as Synergy, which works with different operating systems. It can control multiple computers with the same keyboard and mouse, serving as a soft KVM switch.

Using a KVM (short for Keyboard, Video, Mouse) switch can provide a hardware-based solution when managing multiple computers. KVM switches have multiple video inputs connected to the respective computers and a single video output leading to a monitor. Most KVM switches come with PS/2 Mouse and Keyboard ports, however, newer versions employ USB ports instead. Depending on which type of Computer interfaces the KVM switch supports, it may be necessary to acquire adapters. Additionally, because KVM and USB signal cables are limited in length, the computers will likely need to be within a 10 foot range or require additional repeater and/or extender hardware.

Obtain extra cables if required to connect the KVM to the computers and I/O devices.

Choose the product that is compatible with your computer and its relevant operating system(s). Many KVM switches require installation of separate drivers and a small program to enable switching between different systems. Depending on the type of operating system(s) you use, you may need to install specific drivers for each in order to make sure the KVM functions properly.
